Epidermal lipids are an essential part of the skin’s stratum corneum. Therefore the most effective lipids for maintaining skin health are those most identical to the epidermal lipids: ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.
These lipids also make up about 50% of cell membranes, and can be damaged due to a process called lipid peroxidation, as well as exposure to internal and external stressors.
Intercellular lipid damage compromises barrier function, which can lead to transepidermal water loss. TEWL can result in dryness, irritation and wrinkles. Therefore it’s evident that lipids are an integral part of skin health, and key to a well-functioning barrier system. The essence of skin moisturizing is lipid replacement, best accomplished by applying the relevant lipids.
Ceramides maintain youthful, plump, well-hydrated skin.
Cholesterol lubricates surface layers, delivering an emollient + creamy texture to moisturize profoundly, without risk of irritation or breakouts.
Biomemetic fatty acids balance skin’s oil ratio without essential oils to disrupt barrier lipid balance or threaten its microbiome.
CERAMIDES Lipid molecules within cell membranes, they help cells form a protective layer that plumps skin and retains moisture.
CHOLESTEROL An important barrier lipid, it has water-binding properties and is crucial to maintaining proper barrier function.
FATTY ACIDS Polyunsaturated fats crucial to proper barrier function, examples are: Cranberry Seed oil, Black Raspberry seed oil, Chia seed oil, prickly pear seed oil, evening primrose oil.
PHOSPHATIDYL SERINE A phospholipid that is an important (though small) component of the lipid barrier. Some studies show topical application slows wrinkling by inhibiting enzymes that break down collagen.
EICOSAPENTAENOIC ACID A vegan alternative (from algae oil) to the hard-to-get type of Omega-3 (EPA) found in fatty fish.

So far so good! I love the ingredients list, and the fact that it is an emulsion, versus a pure oil. I find this helps it absorb much better and feels more skin friendly- that being said, it is quite heavy still for my 30 yo skin (although no doubt perfect for more mature skin) , so I mix it with two sprays of the probiotic mist which helps thin it out into a really lovely, very spreadable mixture.
Recently I have been battling face inflammation caused by a histamine reaction caused by MCAS(Mast Cell Activation Syndrome). It has been months and this barrier lipid complex has given me my skin the moisture it's needed to support what is going on. It is amazing and I'm so grateful to have found this product.
I have seen an improvement in my skin's suppleness using this product, and it doesn't break me out or feel heavy. My only qualm: the Barrier Lipid Complex would be so nice for gua sha-ing, but I have to apply the Age Delay emulsion, like, right after this, to avoid product pilling, and then it's a bit too slippery... Doesn't detract from the quality or outcome of use though!
I’m not sure who is using the suggested 1/2 dropper for each application — if I did I would be an oil slick. Just 4-5 drops is all I need before applying the new face emulsion and SPF. This is really helping to heal my skin barrier while also moisturizing my skin in a way that doesn’t cause a PD flare. Highly recommend this for people with PD after a hydrating serum — just maybe don’t use the recommended dosage while your skin is healing.
I always used the finishing oil and when I received notification that it was discontinued, this complex was recommended, to use before the retinol at night and before the daily anti-aging moisturizer in the morning. I was nervous that it would be too much on my skin, nervous about the change to a new product I had not used before. As it turned out, it is wonderful. My skin feels so hydrated and happy when I use it, both morning and night.
